So what gives?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t just trivia. Which triad you lean towards changes the whole <em>feel<\/em> of the myth: are humans made \u201ccivilised\u201d by mind, speech, senses and social order \u2014 or brought to life through breath, ecstasy\/inspiration, and blood-warm vitality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s dig in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Two Triads At A Glance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both sources agree on the core idea: <strong>a threefold divine act<\/strong> brings humans into being. But they frame it differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Snorri\u2019s triad: \u00d3\u00f0inn, Vili, V\u00e9 (Prose Edda)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snorri gives us a tidy, structured trio \u2014 explicitly <strong>brothers<\/strong>, sons of <strong>Borr and Bestla<\/strong> \u2014 who appear in the broader \u201cworld-ordering\u201d cycle (including Ymir and the shaping of the cosmos).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And their names are strikingly <em>conceptual<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vili<\/strong> = \u201cWill\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>V\u00e9<\/strong> = \u201cSacred space \/ sanctuary \/ holiness\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That already sounds like a neat theological package: <strong>Breath + Will + Sacred Order<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">V\u00f6lusp\u00e1\u2019s triad: \u00d3\u00f0inn, H\u0153nir, L\u00f3\u00f0urr (Poetic Edda)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00f6lusp\u00e1 is older in voice and often feels more cryptic. That difference alone explains why people get so hooked on this topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Big Debate: Are These Six Different Gods\u2026 Or The Same Gods Under Different Names?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Scholars have argued for ages over the \u201cidentity overlap\u201d question: did the tradition change, did Snorri change it, or are we looking at <strong>multiple names\/facets<\/strong> for similar roles?  It&#8217;s something we see often in the stories.  Look at how many names \u00d3\u00f0inn has!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theory 1: L\u00f3\u00f0urr is Loki (the \u201cidentity crisis\u201d theory)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This seems to be the favourite debate topic, and it\u2019s not pulled out of thin air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why people connect L\u00f3\u00f0urr with Loki<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Across other myths, we repeatedly see a travelling<strong> trio<\/strong> of:<br><strong>\u00d3\u00f0inn + H\u0153nir + Loki<\/strong> \u2014 not \u00d3\u00f0inn + Vili + V\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Haustl\u00f6ng<\/strong> (Odin\/H\u0153nir\/Loki encounter \u00dejazi)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reginsm\u00e1l<\/strong> (Andvari\u2019s gold)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Loka T\u00e1ttur<\/strong> (later tradition with the same trio)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also <strong>kenning evidence<\/strong>: references to \u201cL\u00f3\u00f0urr\u2019s friend\u201d for \u00d3\u00f0inn that parallel \u00d3\u00f0inn being called \u201cLoptr\u2019s friend\u201d (Loptr being Loki).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And later Icelandic poetic tradition (r\u00edmur) sometimes treats \u201cL\u00f3\u00f0ur\/L\u00f3\u00f0urr\u201d as a Loki-name \u2014 suggesting the overlap stayed alive in oral memory long after conversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The big objection: \u201cBut L\u00f3\u00f0urr sounds benevolent\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>V\u00f6lusp\u00e1 frames the trio as \u201cmighty and loving\/benevolent,\u201d and L\u00f3\u00f0urr\u2019s gift is life-giving \u2014 \u201cgood colour,\u201d warmth, vitality. That clashes with the popular later image of Loki as pure menace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the tension that makes the argument interesting: <strong>Loki isn\u2019t \u201cthe devil\u201d in the older material.<\/strong> He\u2019s a boundary-breaker, a catalyst, a companion in adventures \u2014 until things curdle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So one way to hold the Loki=L\u00f3\u00f0urr theory without forcing it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>early Loki = necessary spark \/ disruptive life-force \/ fire-in-the-blood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>later Loki = destabiliser, oath-breaker, doom-bringer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t <em>prove<\/em> the identification, but it makes it less \u201cno way, impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theory 2: H\u0153nir is older than Snorri\u2019s Vili<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>H\u0153nir is <em>weird<\/em>, and that\u2019s exactly why people think he may preserve something old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In V\u00f6lusp\u00e1, he gives <strong>\u00f3\u00f0r<\/strong>, a word linked to inspiration, mental activity, and ecstatic states \u2014 and it\u2019s the root sitting right inside <strong>\u00d3\u00f0inn<\/strong>\u2019s name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But in later narratives (like the hostage exchange), H\u0153nir can look indecisive or \u201csilent,\u201d relying on M\u00edmir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So one interpretation is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>H\u0153nir may once have carried a <strong>ritual\/divinatory<\/strong> role (or a mythic \u201cpresence\u201d that made sense in cultic or poetic context)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snorri, writing later, may have found that role too obscure or too hard to narrate cleanly \u2014 so he swaps in <strong>Vili (\u201cWill\u201d)<\/strong>, a concept that\u2019s immediately understandable and easier to systematise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This fits a broader pattern: Snorri is often an organiser. Sometimes that\u2019s brilliant. It simply argues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>V\u00f6lusp\u00e1 preserves a more archaic, myth-poetic triad (breath + inspiration + embodied vitality)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snorri reframes the triad into something that reads like <strong>a structured theological model<\/strong> for his audience (breath + will + sacred order)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve noted two spicy \u201cwhy Snorri might do that\u201d angles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Alliterative\/poetic shaping<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Vili and V\u00e9<\/strong> create a pleasing alliterative cluster (words starting with the same sound) in the Germanic style, especially with \u00d3\u00f0inn\/W\u014dden in mind, which could reflect mnemonic tradition (using catchy sounds to make information easier to remember) or deliberate crafting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Christian-era framing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Snorri\u2019s Prose Edda was written in Christian Iceland. Even when he\u2019s preserving myth, he\u2019s doing it through a worldview that values system, structure, and sometimes a \u201csafe\u201d distance from raw pagan sacredness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean \u201cSnorri ruined it.\u201d It means his version is <em>a version<\/em> shaped for explanation and teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theory 4: the \u201cTriune \u00d3\u00f0inn\u201d Idea (Facets, Not Separate Gods)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people (scholars and modern Heathens alike) have explored the possibility that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Vili and V\u00e9<\/strong> aren\u2019t independent characters in an active myth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>they function more like <strong>aspects of sovereignty<\/strong> \u2014 what a king-god <em>is<\/em> (breath\/spirit, will\/intent, sacred authority)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That would explain why Vili and V\u00e9 mostly vanish after creation: they were never meant to be \u201cplot characters\u201d the way Thor or Freyr are.
